Balancing Art and Survival; Challenges and Triumphs of Artist Immigrants
Newcomers with artistic backgrounds often face unique settlement challenges and have distinct needs as they strive to integrate their artistic passions into their new communities. Beyond the universal challenges of finding housing, securing a source of income, and integrating into a new society, artist immigrants must navigate the additional complexities of continuing their creative work in an unfamiliar environment. This is especially true in British Columbia, Canada, where many artists seek to establish themselves both personally and professionally.
In this interview, Poran Poregbal and Samira Gholami sit down with Parisa Hosseinzadeh, an artist with a diverse array of interests, to discuss her experiences and insights.
Parisa shares her journey of arriving in Vancouver two years ago. Despite numerous suggestions she received about the quickest ways to make money, she chose a different path. Parisa worked diligently to establish herself as a new immigrant and pursue her passion for painting and exhibiting her art publicly. "It wasn't easy," she recalls, "but I knew that giving up my art was not an option.
The journey of settling in a new country is already challenging," notes Poran Poregbal, "and for artists, maintaining their creative endeavours adds another layer of complexity." Samira Gholami adds, "Balancing the need to earn a livelihood with the passion for art is a common struggle we hear from many artist newcomers.
In her works, Parisa draws inspiration from the Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad. According to Parisa, Forough embodies the essence of an Iranian woman who has shattered outdated traditions and presented a new world for women. This new world is one where women, even within a traditionally closed society, have their own rights and can live as free-thinking and liberated individuals. For Parisa, Forough represents the ideal of a woman who challenges the status quo, advocating for the freedom and empowerment of women, encouraging them to break free from societal constraints and embrace their independence.
The conversation between the hosts and Parisa delves into the civic interests and needs of a significant number of newcomers who aspire to pursue their art in Vancouver, BC. They explore the challenges of balancing artistic pursuits with basic survival needs, highlighting the importance of community support and accessible resources for artists. "Finding a balance between making a living and continuing my art was one of the toughest parts," Parisa admits. "But the support from local art communities and the availability of public spaces for exhibitions made a huge difference.
Community support plays an important role in helping artist immigrants find their place and continue their work," emphasizes Poran. Additionally, the discussion touches on the various support systems available to artists in Vancouver, such as grants, workshops, and networking opportunities. "Access to resources like grants and exhibition spaces can significantly impact the success of artists in their new communities," says Samira. "These resources are crucial for artists trying to find their footing in a new place," Parisa emphasizes. "They not only provide financial support but also foster a sense of belonging and community.
The discussion sheds light on the intricate journey of artist immigrants in British Columbia, underscoring the resilience and determination required to thrive in a new environment while staying true to one's artistic roots.
