Schreiber Council to Address Concerns Over Cyber Security
Schreiber council meetings are no longer streamed on YouTube, making the Schreiber Media Centre (SMC) the sole YouTube channel for these sessions. To help residents identify the content, a new animated logo and updated agenda items will appear at the start of each meeting, along with titles for each section. This meets the requirement for SMC to introduce the meetings.
After the land acknowledgment, the meeting adopted the minutes of previous meetings. Key items from the Committee of the Whole included:
- Approval of electrical repairs to the water system.
- Approval of expenses for the Earth Day event.
- Approval of surplus asset disposal, including the removal of a metal pole at the fire station.
- Acceptance of repairs to the suction line at the sewer plant.
- Support for the summer drag race event with a silver donation.
- Resolution supporting energy transition.
- Confirmation of attendance at the AMO meeting in August.
- Approval and ratification of all accounts for payment and debit orders.
The CAO's monthly report highlighted changes to the CGIS system for improved online municipal services. Discussion topics included the revamped Grant in Aid application process, security measures for the municipal database, and the treasurer's report on tax ratio calculations and budget updates. Gaps in infrastructure funding were also noted.
The Director of Operations reported on the recycling program, Earth Day video, sewer plant maintenance, Splash Pad opening, pavilion tent installation, and municipal building roof repairs.
The Special Projects report mentioned a grant for accessibility projects, including upgrades to automatic doors and ramps.
The Senior Centre minutes were accepted, and the Library report noted the ongoing strategic plan. Fire Chief Jan Morrison addressed efforts to attract more volunteers following a dry winter.
Communications submissions were discussed, with many to be addressed.
Unfinished Business focused on budget concerns, with a proposed tax increase of over 5% and a potential tax levy. Water rates have risen by 30% over the past four years. Treasurer Bottomley explained the need for increases due to unexpected infrastructure repairs and higher supply costs.
Suggestions for meetings with ministers at the AMO conference included seeking grants for sidewalk replacements and addressing the increased operating costs of the sewer plant due to new regulations.
A special item request for Pickleball events was added, with council considering ways to increase court access. Using the arena was deemed unsuitable due to potential floor damage.
The meeting was then adjourned.
