Schreiber Residents evacuated due to bomb threat
Carol Forge of Ontario Street was cleaning up in her garage when she came across some suspicious items. She called her neighbour, who alerted police to the discovery.
The OPP advised the woman to stay out of the garage until they could bring in specialists to deal with the find. Three days later, residents in Schreiber were greeted by a shocking notice when a Facebook post from the township alerted people living in the Ontario Street area to be prepared for evacuation.
Emergency services blocked off an area of three blocks and proceeded to knock on doors to advise neighbours that they would have to leave their homes.
The recreation centre was opened to allow affected residents to shelter in place while the investigation proceeded. Fire Chief Jan Morrison told Kim Krause from the Schreiber Media Centre that possibly active shells from World War 2 had been found in the woman’s garage. The military had deployed a team of specialists who arrived on the scene and proceeded to remove the items.
Fire Trucks and police vehicles had blocked all access to Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec streets. Mayor Mullins and 2 other councillors were on hand to greet residents at the recreation centre and gave an update on the situation. Sargeant Moscall, from the OPP, then told SMC that they had secured the items and were about to move them to a detonation site outside of town. Residents were allowed back into the area shortly after as the operation had been completed.
