Engaging Communities: The Path to an Inclusive Cultural Centre in B.C

Community engagement and developing a shared vision are crucial civic matters that promote inclusion and equity. The province of British Columbia has initiated a public engagement process to shape the vision for a new museum or cultural centre. This shared space will celebrate Canadians' histories, cultures, and contributions, with a particular focus on diverse South Asian heritages. The Iranian community, a significant contributor to this vision, has come together for reflection and community conversation.

The seminar, hosted by Sherry Soltani, Poran Poregbal, and Samira Gholami, with several guest speakers, took place on June 30, 2024, at the West Vancouver Memorial Library. In collaboration with the Middlepeace Cultural Society and several community groups, Skyrise Media Society organized this community engagement event. It served as a space for conversing about culture, art, and cultural heritage and building consensus for a multicultural community. Sherry Soltani emphasized, "Our diverse cultures enrich the fabric of our society." Samira Gholami added, "By coming together, we build understanding and respect." Poran Poregbal remarked, "This initiative is vital for fostering inclusivity." Guest speakers discussed the importance of reflecting diverse heritages in the proposed museum.

The engagement was designed collaboratively to ensure inclusivity and respect for diverse perspectives. Feedback will be gathered to balance shared and unique aspects within and between communities. This process ensures that words, places, images, event calendars, languages, and other elements are considered carefully and respectfully. Audience participation was significant, highlighting the community's commitment to this initiative. It was emphasized that creating a museum or cultural centre must reflect the diverse South Asian heritages in B.C., fostering understanding, inclusion, and respect for these communities' multifaceted contributions.

Such initiatives underscore the importance of civic engagement in promoting a more inclusive and equitable society.
