No More Silence: complexity of Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence

Sexual violence and sexual assault are critical issues that deeply affect our society and communities in Vancouver, BC. These acts of violence not only cause immediate physical and emotional harm to the victims but also have long-lasting psychological, social, and economic impacts. In Vancouver, these issues are pervasive, cutting across all demographics, including the Persian community.

To address these concerns, Sherry organized an open discussion seminar aimed at engaging the community on this topic. The event featured guest speaker Manijeh Ghaffari, a Therapist and Public Educator who is an expert in sexual violence and sexual assault issues.

Manijeh provided valuable insights into the history and distinctions between sexual violence and sexual assault. She explained that sexual violence is an umbrella term encompassing a range of harmful behaviors, including sexual harassment, exploitation, and assault. Sexual assault, on the other hand, specifically refers to any non-consensual sexual act, ranging from unwanted touching to rape.

During the seminar, Manijeh emphasized, "Education and awareness are crucial in breaking the cycle of silence and stigma surrounding sexual violence. It's imperative that we create safe spaces for victims to speak out and seek help." Her words resonated deeply with the audience, sparking meaningful discussions and questions.

One audience member shared, "Understanding the difference between sexual violence and assault has opened my eyes to the various forms of abuse that can occur. It's important for us to support each other and be vigilant.

Another attendee noted, "Cultural barriers often prevent open discussions about these issues. This seminar has shown me the importance of addressing them within our community.

A third participant remarked, "In Persian culture, there is often shame associated with talking about sexual violence, leading many to keep these experiences to themselves. This seminar provides much-needed awareness and encourages open dialogue, helping us to break the silence.

All of the audience members actively participated by asking questions and making comments. It was a successful open discussion where everyone had the opportunity to share their thoughts.

By bringing attention to sexual violence and assault in the Persian community, Sherry aims to promote a culture of respect, safety, and solidarity. This seminar is a step towards a future where all individuals feel safe and supported, free from the threat of sexual violence.
