Philippine Consulate General Held an Outreach Mission in Neepawa
The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto, in partnership with the Honorary Consul in Winnipeg, conducted a consular outreach mission in Neepawa at the Neepawa United Anglican Church on July 6, 2024. This outreach was made possible with the support of local organizations, including the Neepawa and Area Settlement Services and the Filipino-Canadian Association in Neepawa & Area.
Consul Ronald Sumague of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto highlighted that there are over a million Filipinos across Canada. While Manitoba may not have the largest Filipino population in the country, Filipinos represent a significant percentage of the province's residents compared to other regions.
The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto focuses on key services such as assistance to nationals, economic diplomacy, passport and visa issuance, civil registration, and notarial services. During the Neepawa outreach, 230 clients accessed various services, including passport renewals, Social Security System applications, Special Power of Attorney requests, notarial services, and dual citizenship oath-taking.
Consul Sumague also mentioned that voter registration is one of the important services the consulate offers. Although this service was unavailable during the Neepawa outreach, it will be offered at the upcoming outreach in Winnipeg. He emphasized the importance of voter registration, noting that Filipino nationals have until September 30 to register ahead of the Philippine general election in May 2025.
For the Filipino community in Neepawa, this consular outreach is a milestone, as it saves residents from needing to travel to Winnipeg during quarterly outreaches or even farther to Calgary or Toronto to process essential documents like passport renewals.
The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto noted the possibility of future outreaches in Neepawa, depending on continued demand. They plan to coordinate with local Filipino organizations to assess the need for similar services in the coming months.
