LSHS 2024 Graduation Ceremonies Take Place Under Uncertain Times

Despite the uncertain economic future of Terrace Bay, there was a palpable sense of positivity during the 2024 Lake Superior High School graduation ceremony. For the fourth consecutive year, the Schreiber Media Centre covered this special event, which saw 21 students proudly receive their Grade 12 certificates. Grade 11 student Brayden Ferland and 2022 graduate Ross Vincent volunteered as camera operators for this years graduation.

This year’s ceremony featured a few notable upgrades, including new stage dressing, enhanced lighting, an improved sound system, and a large video projector that captivated the audience as they eagerly awaited the graduates' entrance. The auditorium was filled to capacity as M.C. Laura Mason warmly welcomed the guests and students.

A new chapter began for LSHS with the introduction of Sara Curtis as the new principal. She kicked off the ceremony with a heartfelt speech, expressing her gratitude to the guests and applauding the hard work and determination that this year’s students demonstrated throughout their final year of secondary studies.

The next segment of the ceremony was the awarding of bursaries and prizes, continuing a tradition of strong community support. Once again, local businesses and organizations generously contributed to recognizing the graduates' achievements.

Will Goodman, the Director of Education for the district, delivered a moving speech that underscored the vital role of education in small, rural communities. He spoke passionately about the challenges of providing quality education in remote areas, emphasizing that limited resources should never diminish student opportunities.

School board trustee Jason Nesbitt followed with a brief but sincere acknowledgment of the students’ accomplishments over the past year.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of diplomas, with each student receiving their certificate from Principal Curtis and Director Goodman. Representatives from various businesses and organizations then took the stage to present the awards to students who met the criteria for each category.

As the ceremony concluded, the graduates were invited to the front of the school for photos, capturing memories of this milestone achievement. Congratulations to all the graduates on their hard-earned success.
