City of Barrie AcquiringLand For Permanent Cricket Pitch

The Barrie Arts and Sports Academy recently celebrated the successful conclusion of the inaugural season of Barrie’s first-ever cricket Super League. In a thrilling final match on Sunday, September 15, the Barrie Warriors emerged victorious, claiming the trophy after defeating Kings XI Barrie.

The Super League, which featured eight teams, ran for three weeks throughout September, marking a historic moment for cricket in the city. Nithin Liviero, co-founder of the Barrie Arts and Sports Academy, expressed excitement about the league’s success and outlined ambitious plans for the future.

“Next year, it’s going to be bigger, it’s going to be better,” Liviero said enthusiastically. “We’re expecting more than 15 teams to participate, and the league will run throughout the summer. We’re also hoping to improve the facilities.”

Liviero’s hopes for better facilities might soon be realized. During the league’s finals award ceremony, Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall announced that the city is in discussions to purchase land for a permanent cricket pitch, addressing the league’s current reliance on a portable one.

“It’s fantastic to see how cricket is influencing our community, and we want to support its growth,” Nuttall said. “We know the current grounds aren’t good enough. That’s why we’re in the process of acquiring land for a dedicated cricket pitch, and we hope to finalize the deal in the next few months.”

The Cricket Super League, with a 100% South Asian participation rate, reflects the growing cultural diversity in Barrie. Mayor Nuttall hopes to see even more residents from different backgrounds get involved in the sport in the future, helping to expand cricket’s reach within the community.
