On August 18 St. Johns Street was shut down between Queens and Moody streets while over a hundred businesses, artisans, and non-profit groups animated the street, performers filled St. Johns with music, and restaurants and food trucks kept the crowds full. All in celebration of the return of Car Free Day to the City of Port Moody which ran from noon to 5pm.

As the name suggests, attendees of Car Free Day were invited to leave their cars at home and find some other means of transporting themselves to the event be it under their own power – by foot or by bike or on a kick scooter or skateboard; or by some other environmentally friendly means such as – e-scooter or e-bike; or even by use of public transit. Of course cyclists were invited to park their bike for free with The Bicycle Valet, sponsored by TransLink and operated by Better Environmentally Sound Transportation ( BEST).

The TransLink team was also at Car-Free Day with their outreach and historical buses featuring fun interior décor, games, and transit information.

Car-Free Day was put on by the City of Port Moody in partnership with, TransLink and the Tri-City News.

Car-free days take place across the country and aim to inspire people to get out of their cars, interact with each other, and explore alternative modes of transportation.

While Port Moody was celebrating Car Free Days the City of Port Coquitlam was celebrating car culture by holding their 18th annual Downtown Port Coquitlam Car Show. Over 70,000 people were on hand to witness 400+ classic and custom vehicles at one of BC’s largest outdoor car shows.
