Schreiber Council Receives Strategic Plan Update
Schreiber council received a detailed status update on its Strategic Plan from McSweeney and Associates during a recent meeting. In the presentation, consultants emphasized that the plan’s success hinges on full support from both council members and the wider community. The Strategic Plan, designed to outline the town’s current strengths and weaknesses, serves as a guiding framework for decision-making as Schreiber moves forward. A key highlight of the workshop was the active participation of the Schreiber Media Centre, which reiterated the importance of using social media to engage residents and promote civic concerns.
While the plan outlines the path ahead, its implementation is now in the hands of the administration, which will be tasked with executing the recommendations. Following the presentation, a brief question-and-answer session allowed council members to clarify aspects of the plan and its potential impact on the town.
In other business arising from the previous meeting, council approved the creation of several new job positions, signalling a focus on economic growth and infrastructure improvements. Additionally, the final contract for long-awaited repairs to the arena roof was approved, marking a significant milestone for the town’s recreational facilities.
All accounts for payment and debit orders were also ratified, with no outstanding issues of unfinished business.
The meeting then moved on to new business, including the approval of a student bursary for Spencer Bryson. Council also authorized a donation to the local hockey team in memory of Linda Bryson, reflecting the town’s strong commitment to supporting youth and community activities.
During the Committee of the Whole session, the CAO provided a detailed report focusing on recent breakdowns at the wastewater treatment plant, a key concern for the town. Ongoing efforts to secure funding for various projects were also highlighted. Additionally, council approved the use of an empty room, currently used occasionally by driver license testing staff, for Superior Country as a goodwill gesture, reinforcing the town’s cooperative spirit.
A report on the recent Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference emphasized meetings with provincial ministers regarding Schreiber’s ongoing challenges. Key topics included concerns about the wastewater treatment plant, the economic impacts of a recent mill closure, and the pressing issue of high-speed internet access in the region.
The Director of Operations provided an update on several ongoing projects, many of which are nearing completion. However, continued maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant remains a priority. The director also noted that work on the medical centre is progressing well, with the final stages of construction underway. Health and safety concerns were addressed, particularly the need to repair the back stairs and ramp at the town hall, which is currently being used as an entrance to the senior centre.
One notable proposal came from a local group interested in operating the concession stand at the arena throughout the winter months. Council approved this request, with profits from the sale of food items being allocated to support the local dance school.
The recreation department submitted its monthly report, with preparations underway for the upcoming arena season. A preliminary schedule for ice time has been drafted, ensuring the arena will be well-utilized during the colder months. Additionally, the food bank’s request for free use of the community hall for a penny auction was approved, reflecting council’s appreciation for the essential services the food bank provides.
Planning for the annual winter carnival is already in its initial stages, with more details to be finalized in the coming months.
The Treasurer's report highlighted the town’s current financial status, noting the expenses remaining for several key projects. Despite some financial challenges, many of the projects are either nearing completion or fully wrapped up, leaving the town on solid footing heading into the next fiscal year.
During the communications segment, council discussed various requests and letters of support. One item of concern was the ongoing delays in MPAC assessments, which have made it difficult for council to finalize budgets that depend on up-to-date property assessments for taxation purposes.
In a final matter, council discussed the closing of the splash pad for the season. It was decided to close the popular facility during the first week of September as school resumes and public demand for the park decreases.
The meeting concluded with no further business and was officially adjourned.
