The Value of Bilingual Education for the French Language in the North Vancouver community

The importance of bilingualism in French and English in North Vancouver community is increasingly recognized, particularly in education. Samira Gholami, a volunteer TV host and community educator, recently interviewed Tannaz Rabbani, a French tutor in North Vancouver , BC. Special Education Assistant, and educational assistant, on the civic issue of French language education in Vancouver’s schools. Tannaz shared her experiences working in two distinct types of schools: French immersion and Conseil scolaire francophone (CSF).

During the conversation, Tannaz highlighted key differences between the two systems. In French immersion schools, there is a broader focus on students learning essential skills, including in the English language. In contrast, CSF schools prioritize strict adherence to speaking French in all settings. When Samira asked which type of school Tannaz preferred to work in, she responded that she favored CSF schools in North Vancouver as they align with her passion for the French language.

Samira also asked Tannaz how she found Vancouver as a place to provide French language services. Tannaz explained that it is not always practical to use French solely when seeking services in Vancouver, unlike other French-speaking cities in Canada. She emphasized the growing need for skilled French teachers in Vancouver, noting that many are being recruited from cities like Québec to fill teaching positions in local schools.

The conversation expanded into the broader value of knowing multiple languages. Tannaz stated that learning more than one language is always an asset, and some people even know two or three languages, which provides them with greater opportunities in life. Whether in job applications, travel, or simply connecting with others, multilingual individuals tend to have more diverse options available to them. Samira further noted that fluency in both French and English is particularly beneficial when applying for government jobs, which often prioritize bilingual candidates.

Tannaz and Samira also discussed the importance of continuing French education outside of school. Tannaz emphasized that government and private institutions play a crucial role in supporting students who wish to further develop their French language skills. Programs like French tutoring centers, cultural organizations, and community initiatives provide essential opportunities for students to practice the language in immersive settings. Tannaz encouraged parents to enroll their children in these extracurricular programs, noting that regular exposure to French in real-world contexts helps reinforce what students learn in school and builds long-term language proficiency.

Samira and Tannaz both agreed that a comprehensive approach to French education, which includes not only school instruction but also community support, is essential for developing the next generation of bilingual Canadians.
