Building a Stronger Community: Jodie Wickens’ Vision for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain
As the community gears up for another election, Coquitlam and Burke Mountain residents are taking a closer look at NDP candidate Jodie Wickens. Having previously served as MLA and currently holding a leadership role in child and youth services, Wickens brings a wealth of experience to her campaign. This time, she is focusing on key local issues like building new schools, improving healthcare access, and ensuring affordable housing for families and new immigrant communities, including the growing Persian population.

In the heart of Coquitlam, where these vibrant communities including Persian Community shape the city's future, Sherry sat down with Jodie Wickens to discuss her vision. As a community journalist, Sherry aims to inform local residents about the candidates who are working to improve the quality of life in the area. With her deep ties to Coquitlam, Sherry's interview highlights Wickens' long-standing commitment to public service, education, and social justice.
Wickens, the youngest woman ever elected to the BC Legislature in 2016, shared her dedication to making tangible changes in areas critical to Coquitlam-Burke Mountain. She highlighted the NDP’s efforts to deliver affordable housing, create new schools, expand healthcare access—especially by increasing the number of family doctors—and improve childcare. "Progress is being made, and as MLA, I can help tackle these goals by advocating for greater education and support," Wickens said.
Sherry asked, How familiar are you with the Persian community in Coquitlam and Burke Mountain, and how will you be their voice? Wickens emphasized the Persian community's important role in the area’s diversity and growth. As MLA, I will ensure their voices are heard by advocating for policies that address their specific needs
Sherry also asked about Wickens’ background in child and youth programs and how it would influence her work as MLA. Wickens responded, "I’ve seen firsthand the struggles young people face, and as an educator and advocate, I’m committed to expanding mental health resources and creating pathways for their success. Families and youth are crucial to shaping the next generation in our community."
Engaging the community is a key focus for Wickens, who plans to hold regular town halls to ensure that residents’ concerns are heard. "This election is about building a stronger, more inclusive future," she concluded, encouraging voters to join her in shaping a better Coquitlam-Burke Mountain.
Sherry ended the interview by reminding viewers of the importance of voting on October 19th: “Let’s all do our part for a better community."
