Terrace Bay Seeking Funding for Improvements to the Multi Sport Centre
On October 7, 2024, Terrace Bay CAO John Hall proposed adjustments to the structure of Terrace Bay’s council meetings, aimed at enhancing efficiency and responsiveness. Key changes would allow attendees to present before council earlier rather than waiting until the question period. Additionally, the council is considering shifting the in-camera session, traditionally held mid-meeting, to the end. Council is also looking into improving video stream quality as better internet speeds become available, aiming to make remote access more effective for the community.
In celebration of Local Government Week, Terrace Bay will host an open house, inviting the public to visit, ask questions, and learn about municipal operations. In previous years, students attended special sessions to gain insight into the workings of municipal government, providing them with valuable civic knowledge.
The Treasurer’s report highlighted the financial challenges posed by the ongoing mill closure, which has impacted nearly 25% of the town’s working budget previously supported by taxes from the mill. Since its January 2024 closure, the council has faced revenue shortages that significantly impact budget allocations and planning.
The Recreation Department presented a report emphasizing the urgent need to resurface areas within the multi-court sports facility, which have fallen into disrepair. Council discussed submitting a grant proposal to cover the resurfacing costs and briefly reviewed the projected expenses and repair breakdown.
Fire Chief Ryan Falzetta presented to council, underscoring the critical importance of volunteers within the fire department. With open positions for both a firefighter and a junior firefighter, Falzetta recommended two individuals for these roles. Council approved both appointments, strengthening the department’s capacity.
All bylaws introduced during the evening meeting were passed without amendments or further discussion. Additionally, an update on the mill’s status was provided. Despite the absence of interested buyers or investment, council expressed cautious optimism that circumstances surrounding the mill might improve.
During the question period, a resident approached council with inquiries about accessing emergency response information on the town’s website. Hall assured residents that updates are underway to improve the website’s usability and make emergency information readily accessible. He also acknowledged that some residents are experiencing issues with online surveys.
The meeting wrapped up with an in-camera session, moving council into closed-door discussions for further deliberation on confidential matters.
