Fostering Community Through Art: Place des Arts’ Lasting Legacy

Today on Face to Face, Geneviève Kyle-Lefebvre sits down with Joan McCauley, Executive Director of Place des Arts, and Matthew Sebastiani, its Board President, to explore the vibrant history and community role of this cornerstone arts center. Since opening its doors in 1972, Place des Arts has grown from a small arts facility into a dynamic community hub in Coquitlam’s Maillardville neighborhood, offering diverse, inclusive programs for all ages. McCauley and Sebastiani reflect on how Place des Arts has expanded its reach and role, responding to community needs and the evolving artistic landscape of the Tri-Cities.

Geneviève Kyle-Lefebvre – Local Journalism Initiative

Place des Arts welcomes people of all backgrounds with a wide range of classes—from visual arts and music to dance and drama. This breadth of programming ensures something for everyone, creating opportunities for people across generations to engage in creative expression. The organization’s scholarship programs play a vital role in making arts education accessible, supporting local students who might otherwise lack the means to participate.

Volunteers form the backbone of Place des Arts, helping foster a welcoming environment and keeping operations running smoothly. Community involvement, according to Sebastiani, remains crucial to their mission, with residents of Coquitlam continually stepping up to contribute time and resources.

The organization not only enriches the present community but also celebrates the history and culture of the Maillardville area, a historic center for French-Canadian culture in British Columbia. Family Days, such as the upcoming one on November 25th from 1–3 pm, unite families in a celebration of the arts, drawing participants from across the Tri-Cities.

Mark your calendar for an afternoon of creativity and community!

As Place des Arts looks to the future, McCauley envisions deeper partnerships with local schools, bringing more creative programming into classrooms and inspiring a new generation. With exciting events, bursaries for students in need and initiatives on the horizon, Place des Arts continues to encourage participation and celebrate the vibrant diversity of the Tri-Cities community, cementing its role as a pillar of Coquitlam’s cultural landscape.
