As November kicks off, Climate Action Week has arrived at New Westminster’s Public Library, sponsored by the BC Library Association and organized with support from the New Westminster Climate Action Hub. This week-long event offers a range of activities focused on empowering the community to take climate action and deepen their understanding of environmental issues.

The highlight of the week is a day-long workshop called Regeneration, a program inspired by Paul Hawken’s influential book, Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming. Local environmentalists will guide the workshop, contextualizing the global insights from Hawken’s work for New Westminster and discussing practical ways for residents to make a difference.

Another unique offering is the Joy of Mending workshop, presented by the New Westminster Climate Action Hub. Participants will learn how to repair their clothing and explore the significant environmental impact of the textile industry. This hands-on session emphasizes how small actions, like mending clothes, contribute to sustainability.

The Climate Action Hub will also host a film screening followed by a group discussion. The film serves as a father’s heartfelt video letter to his child, exploring the challenges posed by climate change and the world his child will inherit. The discussion afterward will give participants a chance to reflect and share their thoughts on climate action and the emotional impact of environmental degradation.

Several programs align with ongoing activities at the library, such as Story Time for preschoolers and the library’s Book Club. This month, the Book Club will discuss Canadian author John Vaillant’s multi-award-winning book, Fire Weather. The book dives into the harrowing details of the Fort McMurray fire, offering insights from scientists and firefighters on the increasing risks in our warming, fire-prone world.

NewWest.tv journalist Susan Millar spoke with Chief Librarian Carolyn Casenyas to learn more about Climate Action Week and the library’s role in fostering environmental awareness within the community. “We hope these programs inspire and empower our community to take meaningful action on climate issues,” Casenyas said, adding that the library is committed to being a hub for learning and engagement on critical issues like climate change.
