Terrace Bay Heading for a Budget Shakeup Next Year

The December 2nd Terrace Bay council meeting commenced with the approval of the agenda, which had no additions. The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted without changes.

The first major item was a report from CAO John Hall, who announced that Tesla would renew its five-year contract with the town for the downtown supercharging station. The station has been well received, attracting new visitors who stop to charge their vehicles.

An update on the finalized NOMA delegation followed, reflecting decisions made during prior meetings.

Council approved an upcoming increase in fees for municipal services such as hall rentals. The adjustment aims to offset rising costs in labour, utilities, and building maintenance. Additionally, a borrowing bylaw was passed, ensuring the town continues its financial partnership with CIBC.

In other business, the town’s old half-ton truck, now considered surplus, will be sold to the highest bidder. To strengthen infrastructure reliability, council approved purchasing extra pumps for the ground well water system. This decision addresses previous supply chain issues that left the system vulnerable when a pump failed.

Despite increased operating costs at the ski hill, there was a silver lining: insurance costs for the season have decreased slightly.

The special projects coordinator presented a request to dispose of surplus electronic equipment, including iPads and computer accessories, ensuring proper management of outdated technology.

All proposed bylaws discussed during the meeting were approved and enacted.

During the open question period, a resident inquired about the wording of the land acknowledgment, prompting council’s consideration.

The ongoing situation with the mill was also addressed. While interest from potential investors remains confidential, council expressed cautious optimism, though many residents are doubtful the mill will reopen at its former capacity.

Preliminary budget discussions highlighted the need to reassess service options amid financial constraints. Council acknowledged that tying the budget to the town’s strategic plan would require careful balancing of priorities and expenditures in the year ahead.

The meeting adjourned with the next session scheduled for two weeks.
