On December 5th, the Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) Planning Committee met to review progress and address key funding concerns for future initiatives. Facilitated by Elena Taghizadeh, the meeting focused on strategic planning, community funding, and the extension of the SDP administrative coordinator’s position.
Joel Klassen, agency co-chair for the Community Building Working Table, informed the committee that the administrative coordinator’s role would be extended by three to five months, until the ongoing SDP refresh process is completed. Klassen proposed inviting City of Toronto staff to future meetings to provide more clarity on the extension and explore potential updates to the position’s responsibilities.
A major focus of the meeting was the need to secure sustainable funding for the SDP to continue into the future. Co-chair Walied Khogali Ali highlighted the crucial role of funding in supporting grassroots initiatives, community safety programs, and fostering social inclusion in Regent Park. Walied invited members to join the SDP funding committee to bolster efforts in this area. He also suggested that more Regent Park residents should directly advocate at City Council to raise awareness about the SDP’s impact on the community.
Walied emphasized the importance of creating an impact report to showcase the positive effects of SDP funding on the neighbourhood. This report will be presented to the City of Toronto to advocate for continued financial support, reinforcing the SDP’s role in promoting equity and giving voice to Regent Park’s diverse residents.
The committee also discussed the importance of strengthening partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and educational institutions to build a broader support network. Collaborative projects could include youth engagement programs, employment readiness workshops, and cultural events celebrating the community's rich diversity.
Additionally, members explored the possibility of hosting public forums to keep residents informed about SDP initiatives and progress. These forums would create a platform for community feedback, fostering greater transparency and trust between residents and the planning committee.
The Regent Park SDP Planning Committee continues to be a key driver in addressing the community's needs during the revitalization process, ensuring both city officials and residents are engaged in shaping its future. As the committee moves forward, its commitment to advocating for resources and fostering community-led development remains central to its mission.
