Tri-City Food Link Opens Community Kitchen to Fight Hunger & Food Waste

The Tri-City Food Link Society celebrated a significant milestone today with the grand opening of their community kitchen. The event brought together key political figures from the Tri-Cities, including the Mayor of Coquitlam, Richard Stewart. Held outside the Food Link Society, the ceremony reflected the organization’s mission to combat food waste and support those in need. Their motto, "Stop Wasting Food," embodies their commitment to redistributing surplus food to vulnerable families while fostering a culture of sustainability and generosity.

Reihane Mirjani, a board member of the Food Link Society, commenced the ceremony by outlining the organization's goals and achievements. She expressed deep gratitude to attendees and supporters who have contributed to making the kitchen a reality.

Following her speech, Igor Bjelac, an executive Direcctor and member of the society, shared the history of Food Link, detailing when and how it was founded and the dedication of volunteers who uphold its mission. He also emphasized the organization's commitment to transparency and accountability in managing donations and resources.

Mayor Richard Stewart then highlighted the remarkable impact of the Food Link Society in the community. He praised their efforts in addressing food insecurity and bringing people together through collective action.

MP Ron McKinnon echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of community work and how redistributing unsold food helps those in need while reducing waste.

Fred Soofi, a board member and professional chef, spoke passionately about the issue of food waste. Drawing from his experience in the culinary industry, he emphasized the staggering amount of food wasted daily and the importance of educating the community on sustainable practices.

LJI Sherry Soltani of Skyrise Media Society conducted interviews with key figures, including Mayor Richard Stewart, Councillor Matt Djonlic, and Fred Soofi. They discussed the profound impact of Food Link Society’s work and how it has strengthened the community.

The event was a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion. The new kitchen will serve as a hub for empowerment, to serve more people in the community and build sustainable futures.
