The Impact of Community Media in Vancouver
Local community media plays a crucial role in amplifying underrepresented voices, sparking meaningful conversations, and addressing the issues that matter most to residents. It ensures that local stories are heard, cultural identities are preserved, and civic engagement is strengthened. By reflecting the community's realities and concerns, local media fosters a sense of belonging, empowers individuals, and drives positive change from the ground up.
Today, the Skyrise Media Society team has gathered for a special discussion to reflect on our journey, growth, and impact across the Greater Vancouver area. Founded on the belief that local voices matter, Skyrise's mission has always been to provide a platform where diverse communities—particularly Farsi-speaking residents—can stay informed, connected, and engaged. Through our work, we’ve reached countless individuals, igniting important discussions on civic issues. Now, we’re excited to share insights from our team on our accomplishments and vision for the future.
Growth and Future Plans
Gaurav Kohli, Board Director "Skyrise has grown significantly over the past two years. We now have a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and two journalists working tirelessly to produce civic content for our community. Currently, we cover the Greater Vancouver area, engaging Iranians, Turks, Afghans, Tajiks, and Kurds. As we look ahead, our goal is to expand even further, hiring more journalists to cover additional areas in B.C."
Building Strong Partnerships
Zohreh Ansari, Board Director "Community partnerships are central to our mission. Collaborating with nonprofits and community groups allows us to spotlight vital stories. By covering local news and broadcasting events, we ensure the community remains well-informed about critical civic issues."
Advocating Against Violence
Poran Poregbal, Volunteer Host "Violence affects individuals regardless of gender, and raising awareness is critical. Sherry and I are dedicated to bringing this issue to the forefront because safety and dignity are universal rights."
Empowering the Youth
Samira Gholami, Volunteer Host "As a volunteer host, my experience with Skyrise has been invaluable. Local media is especially important for youth, as it empowers the next generation with knowledge and representation, giving them a voice in shaping their future."
Learning Through Community Media
Ali Haghigatjoo, Videographer & Photographer "Volunteering as a videographer and photographer has been an incredible learning experience. Skyrise's training has equipped me with skills that allow me to contribute more effectively to community-driven media and teamwork."
Expansion and Inclusivity
Farzan Kermani, Volunteer Host, Editor & Graphic Designer "We’re broadening our reach to connect with more communities and amplify diverse voices. As we grow, it’s crucial to bring on more journalists to highlight underrepresented issues and drive positive change. Beyond Farsi-speaking communities, we aim to include other minority groups to ensure broader representation."
Impactful Storytelling
Majid Mahichi, LJI Journalist "Our content is shared through social media and OMNI Channel, reaching thousands of viewers. One story that stands out involved a family who connected with essential services after watching our segment on community support networks. Their gratitude reminded us why our work is so important."
Fostering Unity
Mohammad Ahmadi, Volunteer Host "A strong community relies on local voices. Skyrise offers a platform where individuals can share their stories, fostering unity and support."
Engagement and Advocacy
Farshid Parang, Volunteer Host "Engaging with people, being their voice, and supporting our local community are at the heart of what we do. Every story we share strengthens our collective identity."
The Power of Community Media
Sherry Soltani, LJI Journalist "Community TV plays a vital role in bridging gaps, amplifying unheard voices, and addressing civic issues. Through the dedication of our team, volunteers, and collaborators, we are building a space where people see their experiences reflected and their concerns heard. Together, we are shaping a more connected and informed society."
