How did Montréal vote in the federal elections?
Today’s episode of Metropolis covers what some are calling the most important election of Canada’s history. Canadians have cast their ballots for Canada’s 45th parliament last week and have given Mark Carney and the Liberal party of Canada a minority government. Montréalers across 18 ridings sent 16 liberals to Ottawa. The remaining ridings were respectively Bloc and NDP.
Though it was in the metropolitan area that the real shifts happened. Liberals gained 6 seats from the Bloc this election.
To analyze these results, as well as the stories that don’t show up on the electoral results map of montreal, Metropolis invited Dru Oja Jay, publisher at the Breach and Executive Director of CUTV.
In this conversation, Kalden and Dru discuss the implications of the results, and the shifting political landscape, and the dynamics between the federal parties in Montreal by highlighting select ridings in and around Montreal. They explore the rise of the Conservatives along the west island, TMR, and Outremont. The stark difference between Lasalle-Émard-Verdun's by-election results and the results of this federal election. and how it is that Alexandre Boulerice has been able to maintain his seat in Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie while the rest of the NDP in Quebec have washed away since the orange wave.
As Dru stakes out, this minority government scenario is an opportunity for grassroots movements to shape Montréal's political future. Additionally, the discussion touches on environmental issues and the ongoing pipeline controversies, emphasizing the need for grassroots movements to assert their influence.
All this and more on Metropolis.
