Regional District of Nanaimo Board Approves Provisional 2024-28 Budget in Contentious Meeting
The Board of the Regional District of Nanaimo adopted a provisional Financial Plan for 2024-28 in a December 12th meeting that saw some directors expressing strong opposition to the budget, which contains significant spending increases.
Life on Gabriola TV brings you excerpts from the meeting, which was chaired by Vanessa Craig, Director for Electoral Area B (Gabriola, Mudge, and DeCourcy Islands) and RDN Board Chair. Directors expressed concerns about the financial plan's impact on their communities, citing significant increases and questioning the necessity of certain expenses. The budget discussion highlighted tensions among board members, with some advocating for more time to scrutinize spending and others supporting the plan's alignment with the strategic goals of addressing environmental concerns and emergency preparedness. Despite acknowledging the hard work of staff and the need for funds, some directors opposed the budget due to the potential strain on taxpayers, particularly those on fixed incomes.
Craig supported the motion to adopt the plan. "We do still have the opportunity to take what is presented today as our provisional budget, approve it, get the staff working on their work plan, and then we still have time to modify it," she noted during the meeting.
