Metrolinx Hosts Virtual Update Meeting on Moss Park Station Excavation
By Fred Alvarado Fred is a community journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE
On June 13, Metrolinx hosted a virtual open house to update the community on the Ontario Line construction at Moss Park. The meeting included a comprehensive presentation covering the Ontario Line overview, progress to date, and upcoming construction activities.
A key focus of the update was the station excavation, which involves the removal of soil and bedrock to a depth of 30 meters. This crucial step prepares the site for the tunnel boring machine and future station installation. The excavation is a critical phase that sets the stage for the tunnelling and machinery support systems necessary for the new Ontario Line station at Moss Park.
The Ontario Line station at Moss Park will be a significant addition to the subway network, connecting a dense, growing area to public transit. It is expected to serve an estimated 7,300 people during peak hours, helping to reduce congestion on existing routes like the 75 bus and 501 streetcars. The station’s location is highly advantageous, being within a 10-minute walk for over 23,600 residents, including 4,100 car-free households, which will greatly benefit the local community by improving access to efficient public transportation.
The session concluded with a Q&A segment, providing residents an opportunity to engage directly with Metrolinx representatives. This segment allowed community members to voice their questions and concerns about the project, ensuring transparency and addressing public interest in this transformative infrastructure development.
The community’s involvement and feedback are crucial as Metrolinx progresses with the construction of the Ontario Line. This new station at Moss Park is poised to enhance connectivity and support the growing transit needs of the area, marking a significant milestone in Toronto’s public transportation expansion.
