White Shark Encounter Near Grand Manan Captured On Video

When Grand Manan school teacher Andrew Jones took his boat, aptly named School's Out, into the Bay of Fundy on Thursday, July 20, 2023, he turned his engine off hoping to sit back and see humpback whales but instead he had a close encounter with a white shark. He captured all on video with his smartphone.

"It was huge," he told CHCO-TV. "It's dorsal fin--when it circled our boat, and it circled our boat nearly six or seven times, I started taking pictures. And then I thought, 'why am I taking pictures? This is a video situation. Each time the shark came around the boat, I would look it right in the eye it was so close. We had eye contact several times."

Ocearch has a live global shark tracker on their website, and according to the tracker there is currently a 10'8 female white shark named Andromach who pinged on Thursday to the northeast of Grand Manan, which is near where Jones' boat was when he encountered the shark. There is much debate on CHCO's facebook page as to whether Jones' shark was Andromache, but either way, Jones said the experience will stay with him for life.

"Nature is amazing," said Jones. Jones said he wasn't frightened by the experience, but his crew members decided after the shark nearly bit the dive board on the boat.

"I wasn't scared, and maybe I'm not smart enough to be scared, but one of my crew said it was time to go and we better get moving."

On Friday, the fog rolled in, and while Jones is on land today, he's looking forward to his next trip on the Bay of Fundy.
