Treaty Ten News - November 10, 2022 - Community Engagement Meeting - Saskatchewan Tourism

Tourism in Saskatchewan can generally be labeled as overlooked. Northern Saskatchewan is flush with vast forests, wildlife and lakes. Outside of this, is there really anything worth seeing? If you look further, it is a pleasant surprise as to what Northern Saskatchewan actually has to offer in the tourism field.

One particular example we would like to highlight is the ancient Nipekamew Sand Cliffs; a hidden gem located deep in a remote Northern Saskatchewan forest. These sand cliffs are dated back millions of years before the last ice age, it is literally is a view of back in time to when dinosaurs roamed the earth. The sand cliffs are actually located about an hour southeast of La Ronge, Saskatchewan off a gravel road, followed by a half hour walking path, it's quite the journey just to reach the location. Once you reach the location you look up at the remains of an ancient river, and you feel connected to a time in history long before humans walked the earth.

So it's places like these that make you wonder what else it out there, it gets the curiosity flowing. Look a little further North and you find the Athabasca Sand Dunes, the largest body of active sand surface in Canada; literally a desert located in Northern Saskatchewan. So all in all, there are locations worth seeing in Saskatchewan, you just have to know where to look.

The bigger picture is how do we develop tourism in Northern Saskatchewan; these discussions are taking place now, something maybe we took for granted for too long.
