Gravenhurst Undergoes Ward Boundary Review

During a recent Gravenhurst City Council meeting, a recent review of the ward boundaries for the municipality of Gravenhurst was presented to council members by Jack Ammendolia of Watson and Associates Economics Ltd.

The main goal of the boundary review is to discover if the current layout of wards for the municipality is a reflective and fair representation of the current citizens it represents so councillors and the Mayor can provide good governance to their constituents. Ensuring that each ward is accurately represented is crucial for maintaining the democratic integrity of the council and making sure that all citizens have an equal voice in municipal decisions.

There have not been any changes to the wards in Gravenhurst since 2009, which reflected the population growth. In 2021, a ward boundary review was conducted by the District of Muskoka Council, which determined no adjustments were needed. This previous review highlighted the importance of periodically reassessing ward boundaries to account for shifts in population and demographics.

Most of the growth seen in Gravenhurst is Ward One, in the downtown urban core. The District of Muskoka Council review findings showed a population growth of 5% percent from 2011 to 2021. This significant increase in residents in the urban core has implications for resource allocation, infrastructure development, and community services, which the council must consider.

Due to its population growth, Ward One added Councilor representative. The ward boundary review will also consider suggestions from citizens of other wards on whether or not additional councillors are needed. Engaging with the community and incorporating their feedback is an essential part of this review process, ensuring that the council's decisions are aligned with the needs and preferences of the people they serve.

Watson and Associates will conduct their review, which includes engaging with citizens, over the summer of 2024 and deliver their findings to the council by the fall/winter of 2024. The process will involve public consultations, surveys, and possibly town hall meetings to gather a broad spectrum of opinions and insights from residents across all wards.

Any adjustments to the ward would be required to be completed before October 26, 2026, for the next municipal election. This deadline ensures that changes are implemented in time for voters to be fully informed and prepared for the next election cycle. The council aims to have a transparent and inclusive review process, ensuring that all stakeholders know potential changes and their implications.
