Terrace Bay Council Receives Water Quality Update
At the March 17 Terrace Bay Council meeting, several key community updates and initiatives were discussed.
Following the land acknowledgement, council approved the meeting agenda and minutes from the previous session. A representative from the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) then presented the 2024 Section 11 and Schedule 22 reports on Terrace Bay’s drinking water system. The report covered overall water quality, outlined expenses for equipment upgrades, and detailed corrective actions taken in response to three adverse water incidents in 2024, including a lead exceedance and a generator failure. One resident also raised a concern about “pink sludge” in household water, prompting OCWA to commit to further investigation.
Next, local high school teacher Maurice Thiboutot proposed the creation of a traditional First Nations healing garden on land near the ball field. Designed as a cultural and educational space, the garden would feature a fire pit and natural elements. Council expressed support for the concept and agreed to review the proposal in more detail.
Council then reviewed a draft policy outlining the scope of the Commissioner of Oaths' services. The policy clarifies which documents township staff are authorized to commission, specifically excluding high-risk items like wills and land transfers. Council approved the policy unanimously.
A report on council remuneration showed that council exceeded its 2024 budget by $3,633, primarily due to increased travel and additional per diems.
Council also reviewed a request from local high school students seeking extended gym access hours. The request was well-received, with council members expressing support. Staff will return next month with a formal recommendation.
The meeting concluded with a brief public question period, including a clarification that fluoride is not added to Terrace Bay’s drinking water, before council moved into a closed session.
