From August 21 to 25, the community of Louisdale came together to celebrate its 175th anniversary with a week of festivities that honoured the village’s past while bringing residents and visitors together in the present. The schedule featured a wide range of events, from community meals and lively music performances to celebrations of local Acadian culture and heritage. Sports also played a role, with a Richmond Amateur Baseball Association playoff game between the hometown Louisdale Barcos and their rivals, the Port Hawkesbury Bucs, drawing a strong crowd of fans.

The celebrations reached a spiritual high point on Sunday, August 25, with a special mass held in honour of St. Louis, the patron for whom the village was named. The service not only reflected the deep Catholic roots of the community but also emphasized the spirit of inclusivity that has long shaped Louisdale. During the mass, Sylvia Denny of Eskasoni First Nation led a smudging ceremony, bringing Mi’kmaq traditions into the day of worship. Organizers noted that the Mi’kmaq people were instrumental in supporting the Acadian families who first settled in the region after the deportation of 1755, a history that continues to be acknowledged with gratitude.

As part of the anniversary, parishioners and residents also took part in the blessing of a newly planted spruce tree—symbolizing growth, renewal, and the community’s hope for future generations. Alongside it, a time capsule was introduced to mark the milestone year. Families in Louisdale have begun adding mementos, stories, and keepsakes that reflect life in 2024, with plans for the capsule to be officially sealed and buried later this year. Community leaders said the capsule will serve as a gift for the next generations, ensuring today’s memories are preserved for the future.

Following the ceremonies, Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot spoke with organizers Joan Bona and Janasta Doiron Marchand. Both expressed pride in the turnout and enthusiasm for the week’s events, noting that attendance was strong and the atmosphere warm and celebratory throughout the anniversary. They also looked ahead, explaining that planning has already begun for another significant milestone—the 125th anniversary of the Catholic parish, which will be marked in 2027. The organizers said they hope to build on the momentum of this year’s success, creating another opportunity to bring the community together while honouring Louisdale’s enduring history.
