The Thunder Bay Council met on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025, to address several important issues, including filling a council vacancy, approving a budget overrun, and reviewing progress on a number of ongoing community projects.

The meeting began with the customary land acknowledgement, recognizing that the council was gathered on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the Métis people. A central discussion point of the evening focused on filling the vacant council seat left by the resignation of Councillor Johnson earlier in May. Another major issue on the agenda was the rehabilitation of ground wells at Lake Superior, which are essential to the community’s water infrastructure. Council reviewed a detailed recommendation from their contractor, which outlined a total project cost of $159,788.62. This figure came in at $19,788.64 over the amount originally budgeted, prompting questions from members regarding how the overrun would be covered. After a brief debate about long-term infrastructure investment and the necessity of the work, the council agreed to move forward with the recommendation and approved the over-budget expense.

The meeting also included a discussion of a new recreation-related initiative involving the purchase of two golf simulators. The project came with a significant funding commitment from the Northern Ontario Heritage Corporation (NOHFC), which agreed to cover 90% of the costs. This left the municipality responsible for contributing up to $21,280. With council emphasizing both the community and tourism benefits of such an amenity, the agreement was unanimously approved.

Council then received updates on the Aguasobon Golf Course’s recent social media campaign. The campaign had been running through the summer and was reported to have performed strongly in terms of engagement and reach, providing momentum for the municipality’s ongoing efforts to promote local recreation and tourism. In addition, council reviewed and approved an amendment to the existing agreement for recycling collection services, which included an increase in payments to reflect current service demands and costs.

The meeting concluded with a motion to move into a private in-camera session, where council would continue discussions on confidential matters.
