Free Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Service Is Launching In St. Andrews By-The-Sea and More
A free hop-on, hop-off bus service will launch in St. Andrews this summer spear-headed by the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, which is supplying the 11-person bus for the pilot project.
"The hop-on, hop-off bus will be a free bus service that will go around the perimeter of what we call the town plat of Saint right out to the Huntsmansaid Mayor Brad Henderson. Mayor Henderson is also the Managing Director of local attraction Kingsbrae Garden, which is one of the sponsors of the bus service and also one of the stops on the bus route.
"The bus service is made possible by the Fundy Discovery Aquarium (which is under the umbrella of the Huntsman). They are actually going to be acquiring an 11-person bus," explained Henderson. "Visitors from Thursday to Saturday are going to be able to jump on this bus in the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday and get around town a little easier, which should also help with parking. We have a lack of public transportation in the community. We are very thankful that four partners got together for this initiative: the Fundy Discovery Aquarium, Kingbrae Garden, the Algonquin Resort, and the Kiwanis Oceanfront Campground."
The bus will make six stops in total on a loop between the hours of noon and 5pm, Thursday through Saturday, during the two busiest summer months. At a St. Andrews Town Council meeting last week, council voted unanimously in favour of supporting the bus service by supplying signage and benches for the bus stops. Information on usage will be collected by the Huntsman over the summer with the hopes of using the data to grow the bus service in years to come.
"It will be a pilot project. One of the great things about it is that the Huntsman indicated that they will be collecting data and sharing the results with the town, so there's a real opportunity to study what worked and what didn't," said Henderson. "Maybe this is going to be the start of something much bigger."
And there's more happening including speed skating for kids. Check it out.
