At a recent village council meeting, Grand Manan Mayor Bonnie Morse discussed the progress with fundraising efforts to restore Swallowtail Lighthouse, one of Grand Manan's most iconic landmarks. Over the years, the lighthouse has faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather conditions, limited funding for repairs, and a changing technological landscape. Recently, however, a new challenge has arisen that threatens the very structure of this historic landmark.

Recently, significant damage to the lighthouse's lath and plaster ceilings was discovered on the second floor after a winter storm. Large pieces of plaster had fallen to the floor, indicating that water damage had penetrated the exterior of the lighthouse. Ingersoll knew that time was running out to secure the exterior of the lighthouse before irreparable damage occurred.

Morse said that Swallowtail Lightkeeper Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the lighthouse, has raised $160,000 for the restoration project, but the goal is $479,000 to fully restore both the lighthouse and the Keepers House. The 90-year-old shingles on Swallowtail are no longer able to withstand the harsh weather conditions that routinely blow in from the Bay of Fundy.

In response to this new development, CHCO TV is sponsoring a Swallowtail Telethon Fundraiser on April 16 to help the campaign reach its goal. Morse said she will be attending the telethon to help draw awareness to the important restoration work that needs to be done.

Swallowtail Lighthouse has played a vital role in guiding mariners through the treacherous waters of the Bay of Fundy for over a century. It has also become an important symbol of the rich maritime history of New Brunswick. The efforts to restore and preserve this historic landmark are a testament to the community's commitment to its heritage and its future.
