From March 23rd to 29th, 2024, Winnipeg was alive with laughter and excitement as The Winnipeg Foundation presented the Festival of Fools—a week-long celebration of family fun and entertainment. 

Organized during the school spring break, the Festival of Fools offered families a free event to enjoy together. Linked with the Winnipeg International Children's Festival's Circus Arts (C.A.M.P.) programs, this festival was more than just entertainment—it was a showcase of talent. 

Colin Franks, Performance, The Silly People, explained that his event showcases some of the great entertainment that is going to be brought to the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival this summer. 

“I think this event is getting people to be aware that there’s a really fantastic children’s festival that does happen here in Winnipeg. It’s renowned across Canada. We are lucky enough to have survived the pandemic and we want to make sure that everyone starts to come back to outdoor events again.”

As the C.A.M.P. social circus program gained recognition and accolades, organizers realized they had a wealth of talented performers right at their fingertips. With support from The Winnipeg Arts Council, the Festival of Fools was born—a chance for everyone to witness the incredible shows these performers had to offer.

For seven days, Winnipeg was treated to a spectacle of jugglers, clowns, acrobats, swinging trapeze acts, and hilarious performances. The festival was not just about entertainment; it was about community engagement and accessibility. By 'passing the hat' for donations at the end of each show, (rather than selling tickets), the Festival of Fools ensured that the best in family entertainment remained accessible to all.

The impact of the Festival of Fools brought families together, created lasting memories, and fostered a sense of joy and camaraderie throughout the city. Through laughter and applause, the Festival of Fools showcased the power of community, creativity, and the arts to uplift and unite us all.
