Your Town Matters: Interview with Eastern Charlotte Mayor John Craig
Eastern Charlotte Mayor John Craig has addressed pressing concerns surrounding Blacks Harbour's water supply, amidst ongoing repair delays and public anxieties about water quality. Mayor Craig outlined the steps being taken to resolve the water issues, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with Connor Bros., the company responsible for the water system.

"We're running out of time as we get into the colder weather, and it's imperative that it does get done, the sooner the better," said Mayor Craig. Repairs are scheduled as the community races against the onset of winter to ensure the stability of its water infrastructure. Craig assured residents that the repairs remain a priority for the council, despite the necessity of aligning with Connors Bros.' timelines.
The mayor also acknowledged potential boil water advisories that might arise from the flushing of lines post-repairs. "When they do the repairs, they'll have to test the water again and then send the test off. If it has to be a boil order, then the province will make that final determination," he explained.
In addition to the immediate repairs, the community is facing challenges in finding a new water supply. The engineering firm Englobe is conducting studies, but as of now, they have not identified a sufficient water source. Mayor Craig expressed the urgency of the situation, while also highlighting the financial implications. "It takes time because it takes money," he noted, underscoring the need for provincial and federal assistance once a viable source is found.
Another significant issue facing Eastern Charlotte is the lack of adequate childcare facilities. The projected cost of a new YMCA daycare facility is over $2 million, but the province has only pledged $1 million, leaving a substantial funding gap. Mayor Craig explained, "For us to put a million dollars into a building like that is quite steep. We have to try to keep the prices down as low as we can so that we can do it."
Despite these challenges, the council is seeking solutions, including considering local builders to reduce costs and providing land and essential services for the project. Mayor Craig stressed the importance of finding a balance between fiscal responsibility and community needs, particularly given the municipality's other obligations such as fire services and infrastructure maintenance.
In terms of financial planning, the council is preparing for budget discussions, with priorities including fair taxation and necessary infrastructure projects. "We don't want any big spikes in the tax rates for anybody, so we've got to work it so that we try to get them all in line," Craig stated.
