The goals of sustainable development have been instrumental in the programming of TVC22. Following a clean energy roundtable in collaboration with OREC and the David Suzuki Foundation, the conversation has reached a broader demographic.
The roundtable has allowed a bridge of information between the community of Prescott-Russell and the initiatives that OREC and the David Suzuki Foundation are pursuing. Key representatives such as Dick Bakker; Vice President of OREC had been in touch with TVC22 about sharing and promoting the documentary within the community and organization. Other members from OREC and the David Suzuki Foundation have been in touch with TVC22 in regard to the impact and scope of the video.
This article, “Powering The Future: A Documentary Exploration of The Clean Energy Revolution” is the highest-viewed video of 2024 on TVC22’s YouTube channel, with no sign of slowing down in the algorithm. This speaks to the significance and relevance of the subject matter, especially about the power residents wield with education and action.
TVC22 is the only source of community news for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell. Due to how isolated the area is, it’s difficult for residents to stay informed on renewable energy solutions. Given OREC’s established initiatives in the townships of Hawkesbury and Alfred, the documentary increases awareness of the initiatives happening in the community. TVC22’s roundtable discussion increased public recognition of renewable energy solutions and education.
As a result of collaborations from large energy organizations and community media, this documentary special proves that significant changes in attitude and awareness is possible through local journalism. The special also serves as a call to action for other major organizations interested in sustainable development to reach out to local media. Given the success of “Powering The Future: A Documentary Exploration of The Clean Energy Revolution”, the public will become more and more aware of the benefits of renewable energy.

About LJI
LJI Impact is the section of commediaportal.ca where the journalists and their organizations participating in CACTUS' Local Journalism Initiative can share their greatest successes.
Through the written stories, photos and videos you see in the LJI Impact section, you'll be able to read first hand accounts about how the presence of a community journalist is making a difference in communities across Canada through the Local Journalism Initiative and the Community Media Portal.
The Community Media Portal is a gateway to the audio-visual media created by community media centres across Canada. These include traditional community TV and radio stations, as well as online and new media production centres.
Community media are not-for-profit production hubs owned and operated by the communities they serve, established both to provide local content and reflection for their communities, as well as media training and access for ordinary citizens to the latest tools of media production, whether traditional TV and radio, social and online media, virtual reality, augmented reality or video games.
The Community Media Portal has been funded by the Local Journalism Initiative (the LJI) of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and administered by the Canadian Association of Community Television Users and Stations (CACTUS) in association with the Fédération des télévisions communautaires autonomes du Québec (the Fédération). Under the LJI, over 100 journalists have been placed in underserved communities and asked to produce civic content that underpins Canadian democratic life.
